TAMPA, Fla. – Maria Callas was a diva, but perhaps not in the sense that the word is used today. The elegant Greek-American soprano was unquestionably one of the most gifted and influential opera singers of the 20th century. Her performances brought her worldwide acclaim, but it was her high-profile love affair with Greek shipping tycoon Aristotle Onassis that made Callas a household name.

Callas died in 1977 at the age of 53, but her legacy has lived on through her recordings. Many contemporary artists, including Linda Ronstadt and Patti Smith, have named her as a major influence on their own music.

Maria Callas’ family is liquidating the Tampa, Florida property she owned, as well as its contents. Vandenbrook Galleries will conduct a Saturday, October 22 auction of 100 items from the residence, starting at 9 a.m. Eastern Time. Absentee and Internet live bidding available through LiveAuctioneers.

Paintings, decorative objects, garden statuary and furniture are among the articles to be offered.
