Think You’ve Missed the Contemporary Art Boom? There’s Still Time – 8 Artists to Watch in 2016

NEW YORK (ACNI) You’ve seen the news coverage and the jaw-dropping prices. Contemporary art is on fire in auction rooms around the world. But you don’t have to pay millions to get in on a trend that still has upside. Rico Baca, auctioneer and co-owner of Palm Beach Modern Auctions, chose these 8 artists from the modern and contemporary categories as “best bets” for 2016 and beyond.

1 – Kenneth Noland (1924-2010)

“While many of his contemporaries produced editions, Noland did not. He produced very few lithographs. Most of his work was original art. I would go so far as to say Kenneth Noland works are undervalued.”

2 – Ed Ruscha (b. 1937-)

“He’s a relevant minimalist who’s part of the contemporary, modern and pop art worlds – he covers a lot of territory and is well respected.”

3 – Jim Dine (b. 1935-)

“Jim Dine is hugely collected. He’s considered both modern and esoteric, and he and his contemporaries Jasper Johns, Willem de Kooning and Robert Rauschenberg all influenced each other. Dine is represented by one of the most prestigious galleries, Pace.”

4 – Ellsworth Kelly (1923-2015)

“He’s recently deceased, so we know what his entire body of work is, now. Prices tend to go up when any prominent artist dies.”

5 – Tom Wesselmann (1931-2004)

“Looking at his art makes people happy. It’s the classic American dream in bright colors His images are of the girl with the perfect body and the man who has the girl with the perfect body – a little bit naughty, but in a humorous way. Very collectible.”

6 – Hisao Domoto (b. 1928-)

“There’s increased interest in Japanese contemporary art, and Hisao Domoto has a very impressive body of work. Last year we set a record for him at auction. Private collectors are paying attention.”

7 – Kumi Sugai (1919-1996)

“Kumi Sugai is another Japanese artist to watch. He was a printmaker and painter who studied in Paris, so his works blend Western and Asian aesthetics. We also set an auction record for Kumi Sugai in 2015.”

8 – Paul Jenkins (1923-2012)

“Prices have gone up on Paul Jenkins art. He was an abstract expressionist whose work is in the Guggenheim. His paintings have a lot of movement and usually are in colors, but in 2014 we sold a rarity by him, an original piece that was created with India ink on paper. There was a lot of bidder interest. Anything that’s unusual like that can influence a selling price.”
