Rosewood parlor suite, $24,150, Stevens Auction Co.

 

A four-piece laminated rosewood rococo parlor suite in the Hawkins pattern by J. & J.W. Meeks consisting of a sofa, armchair and two side chairs, made circa 1855, sold for $24,150 at an estates sale held Feb. 15-16 by Stevens Auction Co. in Aberdeen, Miss. Also, a laminated rosewood recamier by John H. Belter in the Fountain Elms pattern rose to $18,400; a rococo banquet dining table made by Alexander Roux circa 1855 made $17,250; and a Victorian-era portrait of a young girl in a green dress hit $8,050. Prices include a 15 percent buyer’s premium.

 

Chinese brush pot, $534,300, Clars

 

A Chinese underglaze blue porcelain brush pot attributed to Wang Bu (Chinese, 1898-1968), 6 1/2 inches tall, sold for $534,300 at an auction held Feb. 16-17 by Clars Auction Gallery in Oakland, Calif. Also, a Himalayan gilt bronze figural group of Yamantaka Vajrabhairava, 19th century, topped out at $248,300; a bronze after Auguste Rodin (French, 1840-1917) titled Nude Study of Pierre de Weissant (1995), fetched $59,500; and a Georgian-style gilt bronze mounted bracket clock, late 19th century, hit $59,500. Prices include a 19 percent buyer’s premium.

 

French bisque bebe doll, $18,000, Morphy Auctions

 

A 23-inch-tall French bisque bebe doll, incised “Eden Bebe Paris 9,” sold for $18,000 at a doll auction held Dec. 4 by Morphy Auctions in Denver, Pa. Also, a Maggie Bessie cloth doll with hand-painted features, 13 inches tall, climbed to $16,800; a Circle and Crescent Bru Jne 4 bisque bebe doll, 15 inches in height, changed hands for $10,800; an Izannah Walker cloth doll, 24 inches tall, realized $9,600; and a circa-1885 Jules Steiner bisque bebe doll, 23 inches tall, went to a determined bidder for $7,800. Prices include a 20 percent buyer’s premium.

 

1965 Austin Healy, $14,160, Michaan’s

 

A 1965 Austin Healy sports car sold for $14,160 at an estates auction held Feb. 3 by Michaan’s Auctions in Alameda, Calif. Also, a 1959 Austin Healy roared off for $11,800; a collection of Chinese stamps went over 14 times its projected high value to bring $5,900; a Lavar Karman carpet was a top performer at $3,245; an antique floor safe went for $2,360; a Reed & Barton coffee and tea service brought $3,245; a pair of jade gourd carvings made $3,835; and two jade scholar’s implements gaveled for $4,130. Prices include a 17 percent buyer’s premium.

 

1910 Marklin carousel, $218,500, Noel Barrett

 

An exquisitely detailed, circa-1910 Marklin carousel, crank or steam driven, sold for $218,500 at a Winter Auction held Nov. 16-17 by Noel Barrett Auctions in New Hope, Pa. Also, an Althof Bermann hand-painted tin Santa in Sleigh, one of only two known examples considered 100 percent original, soared to $97,700; a Marklin PLM coupe-vent passenger train set with box chugged away for $46,000; and the Pittsburgh House (circa 1890), from the Toy Museum of Atlanta collection, gaveled for $18,400. Prices include a 15 percent buyer’s premium.

 

Georgian mahogany table, $3,840, Woodbury Auction

 

A fine Georgian mahogany oval gate-leg wake table sold for $3,840 at a Mid-Century, Country & Decorative Arts Auction held Feb. 10 by Woodbury Auction in Woodbury, Conn. Also, a large room-size Persian rug from a Greenwich estate hammered for $3,567; a large 19th century palace-size rug went to a phone bidder for $2,400; a set of six Herman Miller dining chairs realized $1,845; a set of six French Art Nouveau dining chairs brought $1,560; and a Herman Miller rosewood credenza hit $1,440. Prices include a 20 percent buyer’s premium.

 

Confederate archive, $6,900, Jeffrey S. Evans

 

An archive of Virginia Confederate Veterans manuscript records, comprising 870 pages in three journals, for the Stonewall Jackson Camp No. 25, Staunton, Va., sold for $6,900 at a Cataloged Variety Auction held Feb. 16 by Jeffrey S. Evans & Associates in Mount Crawford, Va. Also, a wrought-iron Arts & Crafts candle holder by Samuel Yellin (1885-1940) realized $4,600; a circa 1900 Victorian painted wood doll’s greenhouse hammered for $2,990; and a 160-piece German-made Elastolin western play set hit $2,645. Prices include a 15 percent buyer’s premium.

 

Standard glaze portrait vase, $2,640, Matthews Auctions

 

A standard glaze portrait vase showing a beautifully rendered cocker spaniel, 13 inches tall and artist signed “M. Timberlake,” sold for $2,640 at an auction held Feb. 15-17 by Matthews Auctions LLC based in Nokomis, Ill. The three-day event was held in Raymond, Ill. Also, a Husky Tri-Power porcelain pump plate sign with dog graphics, rated 8.9 out of 10 for condition, realized $2,310; and a Zerolene, “The Standard Oil for Motor Cars,” single-sided porcelain sign, 6 inches in diameter, rated 8.9, hit $1,045. Prices include a 10 percent buyer’s premium.

 

Donato Barcaglia sculpture, $86,500, Leslie Hindman

 

An Italian marble sculpture carved by Donato Barcaglia sold for $86,500 at a Fine Furniture & Decorative Arts Auction held Feb. 10-12 by Leslie Hindman Auctioneers in Chicago. Also, a French bronze figure of a Turkish warrior brought $25,000; an 18th or 19th century wool tapestry gaveled for $23,750; a Revolutionary War-era carved powder horn realized $22,500; a French articulated artist’s mannequin topped out at $15,000; and an English side cabinet by Gillows of Lancaster changed hands for $32,500. Prices include a 20 percent buyer’s premium.

 

Washington portrait flask, $60,840, Norman C. Heckler

 

A large and colorful portrait flask showing George Washington and a classical bust – possibly Henry Clay – sold for $60,840 in an Internet and catalog auction held by Norman C. Heckler & Co., based in Woodstock, Conn. The sale opened Jan. 27 and closed Feb. 6. Also, a pair of portrait flasks showing Washington and Zachary Taylor, both made by the Dyottville Glass Works, Philadelphia, brought $14,040 and $10,530; and a Type 1 free-blown lily pad compote made circa 1840 hammered for $11,115. Prices include a 17 percent buyer’s premium.

 

Sammy Baugh jersey, $109,250, Hunt Auctions

 

A Sammy Baugh Washington Redskins jersey from the 1940s sold for $109,250 at a Super Bowl XLVII Live Auction held Feb. 2 in New Orleans, La., by Hunt Auctions, based in Louisville, Ky. Live bidding took place during the NFL Experience, prior to the Super Bowl. Also, a circa-1960s Sam Huff Washington Redskins jersey went for $31,050; a circa 1968-1969 Sonny Jurgenson Washington Redskins jersey changed hands for $6,900; and a Tom Brady New England Patriots game jersey sold for $27,600. Prices include a 15 percent buyer’s premium.

 

Bulbous-base vase, $5,463, Jeffrey S. Evans

 

A bulbous-base vase done in shiny raspberry with multicolored inclusions and gold trim, circa 1878-1880, sold for $5,463 at a Winter Glass Auction held Jan. 26 by Jeffrey S. Evans & Associates in Mount Crawford, Va. Also, a circa-1925 decorated free hand compote, iridescent colorless with opal hanging hearts, 9 3/4 inches tall, Imperial Glass Co., changed hands for $3,738; and a holly amber covered sugar bowl executed in the golden agate color by Indiana Tumbler & Goblet Co., circa 1908, hit $3,335. Prices include a 15 percent buyer’s premium.

 

Plains pony beaded shirt, $144,000, Skinner, Inc.

 

A mid-19 century Plains pony beaded hide shirt that had belonged to Eugene Barr sold for $144,000 at an American Indian & Ethnographic Art Sale held Feb. 11 by Skinner Inc. in Boston. Also, a Kiowa model cradle brought $57,000; a Pawnee-style bear claw necklace assembled by Milford Chandler (1889-1981) also garnered $57,000; a Yupik Eskimo mask showing a bird head on top of a human-like face went for $31,200; and a Yupik mask of a face with animal ears hit $57,000. Prices include an 18.5 percent buyer’s premium.

 

KPM portrait plaque, $8,625, Carlsen Gallery

 

A KPM portrait plaque, signed P. Rast, sold for $8,625 at an auction held Feb. 3 by Carlsen Gallery in Freehold, N.Y. Also, an 1820 architectural sampler by Rebeca Haines fetched $8,625; a New Jersey tall case clock by Joachim Hill chimed on time for $8,050; a half-hull wooden ship model by Leonard H. Boole went for $6,038; an original oil on board by Saurwein, titled Indians in Snow at Sunset, changed hands for $5,750; and an oil on canvas by Walter Brackett, titled Brook Trout, gaveled for $4,888. Prices include a 15 percent buyer’s premium.

 

Roycroft bedroom suite, $68,500, Doyle New York

 

A Roycroft Arts and Crafts bedroom suite of copper-mounted oak, circa 1907-1908, sold for $68,500 at a sale of items from the collections of C.W. And Marjorie Meriwether Post held Feb. 6 by Doyle New York. The objects were housed at Hillwood Estate, Museum & Gardens in Washington, D.C. Also, a continental rococo carved and painted ceremonial sleigh fetched $23,750; and a whimsical 1890 painting by Walter Hunt (British, 1861-1941), titled Sour Grapes, achieved $53,125. Prices include a 25 percent buyer’s premium.

 

Chinese Hunan banknote, $15,220, Archives International

 

A high-grade 1908 Chinese Hunan government banknote for 100 coppers sold for $15,220 at an auction conducted Jan. 26 in Hong Kong by Archives International Auctions, based in Fort Lee, N.J. Also, a Yu Ning Imperial Bank 1907 “Ch’eng Yang” copper coin issue realized $6,850; a Board of Trade 5-Tael issued banknote went for $8,370; a Hong Kong $500 1931 Bank of India, Australia and China banknote realized $7,610; and a pair of uncirculated MS-66 Japanese Coiled Dragon dollar coins hit $3,960 each. Prices include an 18 percent buyer’s premium.

 

Elmer Crowell whimbrel, $34,500, Guyette, Schmidt

 

A full-size preening decorative whimbrel by Elmer Crowell, East Harwich, Mass., sold for $34,500 at a decoy auction held Feb. 15 by Guyette, Schmidt & Deeter, based in St. Michaels, Md., at the Charleston Marriott in Charleston, S.C., in conjunction with the Southeastern Wildlife Exposition. Also, a classic 1936 model canvasback drake by the Ward brothers, Crisfield, Md., also made $34,500; a full-size running greater yellowlegs by Elmer Crowell hit $17,250; and a gadwall by Cigar Daisey brought $4,600. Prices include a 15 percent buyer’s premium.
