Yayoi Kusama prints stand out in I.M. Chait auction Jan. 28

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. – Two screenprints by Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama are featured in an I.M. Chait International Fine Art Auction to be conducted Sunday, Jan. 28. The 200-lot auction also includes Asian antiques, fine art and jewelry. Absentee and Internet live bidding is available through LiveAuctioneers.

The Kusama screenprints, which will sell separately, depict a pot of flowers (1984) and a patterned red dress (above, 1982). Both are signed, dated and numbered from editions of 100 and 170 respectively. Both prints show evidence of Kusama’s pop art penchant for polka dots.

A pair of unusually large and finely modeled Chinese Tang Dynasty painted pottery figures of court ladies (below) will sell as one lot. The taller figure stands 32 inches high. The slightly shorter one cradles a small dog. These rare figures are expected to sell for $35,000-$40,000.

A large Chinese jade brush pot elaborately carved showing a continuous equestrian hunting scene with tigers, leopards and deer is more than 14 inches high. It bears a Qianlong seal mark but was crafted later (est. $20,000-$30,000).

Jewelry includes a fine jadeite, diamond and platinum foliate brooch in a curvilinear mount set with 10 jadeite cabochon ‘leaves,’ of vivid apple-green coloration (est. $4,000-$6,000).

A bronze sculpture by Jorge Marín (Mexican, b. 1963) depicts of a winged, masked nude balancing within three red painted rings atop a pyramidal base. The sculpture stands approximately 27 ½ inches high and is signed and dated ’99’ on a circular plaque (est. $2,500-$3,500).
