NEW YORK – More than 50 fine Persian and Chinese rugs and a pair of European needlepoint tapestries will go up for bid in a Jasper52 online auction on Wednesday, Feb. 7. These colorful, hand-knotted rugs range in age from antique (19th century) to vintage (mid-20th century) to modern and new. Absentee and Internet bidding is available through LiveAuctioneers.

An old masterpiece featured in the sale is a Persian Kashan Dabir rug (above) made circa 1900 or before. This 10-by-7-foot rug is in excellent to mint condition, having no repairs or restoration. Located in the city of Kashan, Dabir was a workshop known for making finely knotted rugs of the highest-grade wool. The Kashan Dabir rug offered in the Jasper52 auction has a $5,000-$9,000 estimate.

Seldom made after 1910, Serapi rugs are the grandest of the Heriz rug styles of northwest Persia. An excellent example is the 11 ½-by-9 1/2-foot Serapi in the auction. Made circa 1880, it has a low pile throughout and has some rewoven areas. This great decorative carpet (below) has a $7,500-$10,000 estimate.

Bakshaish carpets are named after the town in which they were made in the mountainous Heriz region of northwest Persia. Bakshaish rugs are noted for their artistic and diverse abstracted adaptations of tribal and classical Persian motifs. The Bakshaish-style carpet in the auction is a fine reproduction of a 19th-century original. This modern rug, about 9-by-7 feet, was hand-knotted in Azerbaijan with highest quality wool (est. $2,000-$3,000).

The Jasper52 auction presents six Chinese rugs, three of them incorporating silk. One of the sumptuous wool pile rugs dates to the early 20th century and is in excellent condition with no repairs or restoration (est. $4,000-$5,000).

A 1950s Kurdish rug, or possibly made in Kyrgyzstan, is said to be in mint condition and features dramatic coloring and a geometric design. This 10-by-6-foot rug is expected to sell for $3,500-$4,500.

One of the needlepoint tapestries in the sale was woven in the early 20th century in petit point of wool and silk. It depicts a pleasant outdoor scene of two ladies and a gentleman. This large textile has a $1,000-$1,500 estimate.
