Mid-century design abounds in Kamelot auction Oct. 15

PHILADELPHIA – Kamelot Auction House will present more than 500 lots of furniture, decorative arts, lighting, rugs, mirrors and other design elements on Saturday, Oct. 15, starting at 10 a.m. Eastern. Referred to as the Mid-Century Design Auction, this sale includes a very good assortment of Italian, French and Scandinavian pieces from a number of well-known designers and makers.

The sale will also feature a select group of French furnishings. Likely to pique strong interest is a fine and rare documented Maison Jansen dining table (above). This is a rare example, which is estimated at $8,000-$12,000, is illustrated in an original leather-bound Jansen folio. These folios were most likely used to make presentations to potential clients. Other highlights include an unusual French macassar and bronze mounted five-door bookcase or collector’s cabinet circa 1940 (est. $3,000-$5,000), a French mid-century modern sideboard attributed to Andre Arbus, circa 1950, (est. $2,000-$3,000), and a wrought iron dining or library table attributed to Gilbert Poillerat (est. $4,000-$6,000).

Scandinavian designs will be strongly represented in the auction as well. Lot 350 presents a similar pair of Danish modern rosewood cabinets circa 1960 ($600-$1,000), and other notable finds include a Niels Moller Danish modern rosewood dining table having banded top circa 1960 (lot 352, $600-$1,000), a rare William Hinn Swedish double dresser or sideboard having eight curved front drawers (lot 359, $2,000-$4,000), and a pair of mid century modern upholstered chairs attributed to Finn Juhl circa 1960 (lot 356, $1,000-$1,500).

Leading the selection of Italian design are several Paolo Buffa pieces, including lot 44, a pair of Italian Paolo Buffa upholstered armchairs, circa 1960, (est. $1,500-$2,500), along with lot 69, a Paolo Buffa figural ash commode or credenza, circa 1950, (est. $2,000-$4,000). Another standout piece is an Italian boomerang-form upholstered couch in the manner of Federico Munari, which is expected to bring upward of $2,500-$4,000, as well as a pair of Marco Zanuso Regent upholstered club chairs, circa 1960, (est. $2,500-$4,000), and an Osvaldo Borsani figural birch vanity, circa 1960, (est. $1,000-$1,500).

Some noteworthy pieces from the decorative arts collection include a Georg Jensen/Johan Rohde 224 matched pair of five-arm sterling silver candelabra, circa 1920 (est. $600-$900), a “Sonambient” beryllium copper and brass sounding sculpture (below) by Val Bertoia (est. $6,000-$9,000) and a collection of 10 screen prints on museum board titled Marilyn Portfolio after Andy Warhol (est. $2,000-$4,000).
