NEW YORK – Jasper52 will present a provocative and wide-ranging book and ephemera auction on Sunday, Jan. 22. Absentee and Internet live bidding is available exclusively through LiveAuctioneers.

Titles include children’s literature, biographies, histories and novels.

The 120-lot auction will conclude with a collection of Russian Soviet propaganda posters. One rare example is a Russian Soviet civil war-era poster from 1919 ordering comrades to “Take Good Care of Clothes and Shoes.”

From that same tumultuous era is a poster by well-known Russian illustrator Nikolai Kochergin (1897-1974) opposing Baron Pyotr Nikolayevich Wrangel, who mounted an anti-Bolshevik volunteer army in the Crimea in 1920. This widely distributed poster (below) was prompted by Léon Trotsky’s speech in mid-August 1920, in which he declared that Wrangel’s advance out of the Crimea was starting to threaten the strategic Donetsk Basin in eastern Ukraine.

An anti-Hitler probaganda poster (below) depicts the Nazi Germany dictator in an unflattering pose. The translated text reads: “Hitler’s Germany and Her Vassals Are Facing an Impending Catastrophe,” which is a quotation from Joseph Stalin’s speech given in 1943 on the occasion of the 26th anniversary of the October Revolution.

On a lighter note, two books on yacht design will compete for bids. One is a limited edition copy of A Half-Century of Yacht Designs by Sparkman & Stephens, 1930-1980, by Olin J. Stephens. This large, 200-page volume measures 11 1/4 inches high by 13 1/2 inches wide and includes a dust jacket graded “VG.”

Considered on of the best literary ghost stories of the 20th century is Shirley Jackson’s The Haunting of Hill House. The book (below) offered in the auction is a dust-jacketed first edition.

For children there is a first edition of The Pop-up Pinocchio written by Carlo Collodi and illustrated by Harold Lentz. This is one of the first two of Lentz’s famous pop-up books; Jack the Giant Killer being the other. This book’s four double-page pop-ups are near perfect and in working order. The dust wrapper is exceptionally nice.
