DALLAS – On Oct. 5, Dallas Auction Gallery will host its Fall Fine Art Auction, which is highlighted by 95 works from the collection of entrepreneur, author and philanthropist Sam Wyly of Dallas.

This marks the third sale featuring items from the illustrious collection. The pieces are prime examples of top names in American art including Thomas Hart Benton, N.C. Wyeth, Charles Bird King and Maxfield Parrish.

Absentee and Internet live bidding is available through LiveAuctioneers.com.

“As shown in the two previous Fine Art Auctions the works from the Sam Wyly collection are fresh to the market and we expect them to sell for top dollar to buyers around the world,” said Scott Shuford, president of Dallas Auction Gallery.

“I would like to also note that particularly in the case of the Sam Wyly collection, Texas buyers have shown that they have a wide reaching taste and appreciation for a well-rounded collection. We expect to see the same amount of local interest in the Oct. 5th Fine Art Auction as we have seen in the past. Collectors will see the passion that Sam had when he acquired the art. He’s quite the historian, as a reader and writer. There’s always something that spurred him to purchase a piece,” said Shuford. “It is more than a collection of Sam Wyly; it personifies Sam Wyly as the man.”

In the sale there are many standout pieces, including Benton’s 1938 painting Roasting Ears (above), estimated at $700,000-$900,000, which the auction house says “is a wonderful example of how Benton was at the forefront of the American realist modern art movement.”

There also will be two watercolors by Benton in the sale.

Two works by N.C. Wyeth are featured in the auction, Stirling Castle from 1921 that is estimated at $100,000-$150,000, and the 1916 Black Arrow Endpapers (est. $60,000/$80,000).

Another highlight is Autumn Woods by Maxfield Parrish which is estimated at $200,000-$300,000. This piece is a great example of how Parrish’s decision to move away from figurative works to focus on his passion for the landscapes allowed his work to transition from illustration into the realm of fine art.

Portrait of Benjamin Franklin by David Martin is a standout piece from Wyly’s collection, estimated to sell between $250,000-$450,000. The provenance on this piece can be traced back to John Sargent, London, England 1772, who acquired the piece directly from the artist.
