Clars to feature Asian art, huanghuali furniture in Dec. 10-11 auction

OAKLAND, Calif. – Clars Auction Gallery’s Dec. 10 and 11 sale will be highlighted by extraordinary offerings in Asian art, fine jewelry and decorative art, plus impressive offerings in fine art from France and Russia. Absentee and Internet live bidding will be available through LiveAuctioneers.

Bringing attention to the sale will be an exceptional selection of highly desirable Chinese huanghuali furniture acquired from the estate of Dr. Edward Gerber. The first offering will be a rounded corner cabinet that is estimated to sell for $30,000 – $50,000. Following will be two pairs of huanghuali horseshoe armchairs, each with a matching tea stand. Each set is expected to achieve $35,000 – $55,000.

Over the past theee months, Clars has offered 10 works by contemporary calligraphy master Yu Youren (Chinese, 1879-1964). Each offering of his works has seen the prices realized skyrocket well beyond high estimate, earning over $215,000 in total to date. Clars will again offer four of Youren’s works in the December sale, all with provenance from the estate of a prominent Republic period official.

Going up for bids in the December sale will be Youren’s calligraphy titled Wo yu tian shan, an ink on paper dedicated to his son Yu Youren. This work comes to the sale with an estimate of $15,000-$25,000.

The finest craftsmanship and design from France will highlight the decorative arts and furnishings category. Topping the list will be an amazing French animated locomotive industrial clock (below), which is expected to achieve $15,000 – $25,000.

The jewelry offerings coming to the December sale are extravagant, highlighted by an array of offerings dripping in diamonds. Expected to be the top seller is an Art Deco diamond and platinum bracelet (below) sporting a total diamond weight of approximately 22.00 carats. This piece will be offered for $35,000 – $50,000.

An unusual Verdura Spinel diamond bracelet  features a total spinel weight of approximately 225.00 carats and is expected to achieve $30,000 – $50,000.

French paintings will be among the many highlights with two beautiful oils on canvas by Marcel Dyf (French, 1899-1985). One is a rare painting that depicts the 9th hole at Chiberta Golf Club in Southern France titled, The Golf (catalogue raisonné ref no. 5062), (below) which will be offered for $7,000-$10,000.

A variety of Russian art will also be featured. Estimated at $6,000-9,000, a robust, Impressionist oil on canvas, Still Life with Flowers, by Georgiy Alexandrovich Lapchine (Russian, 1885-1950) will surely lead this category followed by lovely landscape by Vasili Aleksandrovich Kotarbinsky (Russian, 1849-1921) titled, Nude Sunbathing by a Lake, which will be offered at $10,000-15,000.
