MONROVIA, Calif. – John Moran Auctioneers is rounding out the last of the summer months with a two-session studio auction. The decorative art auction will begin at 3 p.m. Pacific time, and the fine art session is set to start at 6 p.m. Absentee and Internet live bidding is available through LiveAuctioneers.
Introduced in the fall of 2016, Moran’s Studio Auctions offer eclectic fine art and objects with estimates ranging from the low hundreds to the mid-thousands.
John Moran Auctioneers will kick off the two-session Studio sale with a fun and wide-ranging decorative art session.
Select contemporary art glass objects by makers such as Daum and Lalique will also make their way to the auction block. Selections include a group of Lalique frosted art glass objects comprising a pair of iconic anemone flower candlesticks together with a fish-motif chalice-form vase, all hailing from a local Los Angeles estate (estimate: $500-$700). A group of sleek silver-plated candlesticks designed by Calvin Klein for Swid Powell (below) combines a modern aesthetic with classic function (estimate: $400-$600).
Buyers searching for interesting Japanese and Chinese decorative objects will find that approximately one-sixth of the total auction catalog is devoted to Asian objects. Chinese highlights include a group of carved jade objects consigned from an important Southern California estate (est. $600-$900).
Traditional Continental decorative arts abound throughout the Studio Decorative Art catalog; a selection of highly collectible cold-painted bronze animal figures consigned from a Ventura County collection are expected to prove popular; two cold-painted bronze dogs, one signed for Carl Kauba (1865-1922 Austrian), are set to make their way to the block with a $400-$600 estimate (below).
The Studio Fine Art catalog features nearly 300 lots, including works by well-known 20th century California and American artists as well as those of Mexican, French, Belgian, English and many other backgrounds.
Local Southern California buyers will be pleased to find that charming works by local California artists abound. Hans Zimmer’s (1910-1996 Los Angeles, Calif.) oil painting of a steam locomotive before a massive factory offers an interesting view into mid-20th century California industry. The work is expected to go for between $2,000 and $3,000. Another Los Angeles artist, Wilfrid Taylor Mills (1912-1988), is represented in the catalog with a view of an iconic Los Angeles landmark. Angel’s Flight – Turn of the Century features a sought-after subject for the artist, and the relatively small composition has been assigned a conservative $700-$900 estimate.
Moran’s will offer a small selection of circus-themed works. A charming oil painting of a row of circus elephants standing before primary-colored Ringling Brothers circus train cars by Pasadena, Calif., painter Chang Reynolds (circa 1914-1987) is set to head to the block with a $1,000-$1,500 auction estimate.
The Studio Fine Art Auction catalog is chock-full of fun modern and contemporary examples, including a selection of modern watercolors from various private collections around Southern California. One such work by New Mexico painter Frank LaLumia (b. 1948) should appeal to California collectors, as it offers a detailed, jewel-toned view of San Francisco’s Chinatown (estimate: $600-$800). Internationally known fantasy illustrator Frank Frazetta’s (1928-2010, Fort Myers, Fla.) Golden Girl is set to head to the block with a conservative $400-$400 estimate. The work depicts a beautiful female nude within a fantastic landscape filled with various animals and flora.
